The Challenge

To design a food hall for Manchester Airport that embodies the essence of the city and its people. The goal was to go beyond a typical dining space and create an environment that reflects Manchester’s industrial roots, its creative pulse, and its fearless spirit of innovation. Every detail, from the visual identity to the spatial experience, needed to tell the story of a city built on resilience, craftsmanship, and character.

The Objective

To craft a destination where travellers and locals can pause, connect, and experience the true flavour of Manchester. The food hall was envisioned as more than just a place to eat, but as a celebration of the city’s culture and community. Through thoughtful design, material choices, and atmosphere, the space invites people to feel the warmth, pride, and authenticity that define Manchester’s identity.

The Rationale
behind the brand

The logo’s textures and imperfections mirror the unique and rustic charm of Manchester’s industrialized cityscape. Drawing inspiration from the city’s iconic architecture and the Manchester

clover, the colors embody its heritage. The aim is to authentically represent Manchester’s identity and heritage through the logo.

Explorations

Before the Foundry design identity was established, this proposed brand identity was implemented. It was later rebranded to adopt a less vibrant look that reflected Manchester’s industrial aesthetic. The idea behind Rebel draws from the city’s history of resilience, creativity, and bold spirit, celebrating its raw authenticity and heritage through a modern design language.

Developing Foundry

Still keeping the slash in Rebel! to represent a work-in-progress visual identity that connects with the idea of the Foundry, always evolving within industrial settings. The colours I chose reflect both the natural and industrial sides of Manchester, capturing the city’s energy and the spirit that keeps it alive.

My personal takeaway...

This project was a tender from Lagardère for Manchester Airport. Working under tight deadlines, I successfully rebranded Rebel! into Foundry within the set timeframe. The experience strengthened my ability to manage complex timelines, lead efficiently, and uphold high design standards under pressure.
